How to Keep Predators Out of Your Chicken Coop (I Failed Our Hens…)

It is hard for everyone when a loss is suffered on the homestead. We, unfortunately, had to suffer this tragedy when a possum helped itself to one of our hens. It was the worst experience I have encountered since beginning this lifestyle, one I wish no one had to endure. Where we currently live, the…

Calves First Week Check-In (They Have Names Now!)

I may be a bit biased, but Jersey’s are one of the cutest calves I have ever seen. They almost look like little deer! We were nervous going into cow ownership as first timers, but after lots of research, and getting our hands dirty, I can honestly say that it was well worth the risk….

Raising Our Bottle Calves (As Organically as Possible)

With our calves now weaned, I am reflecting on what we have learned, and what I wish we had known.

Where our Journey Began

Growing up, my mother wanted me to learn the value of a dollar, so she helped me build my first business, a petting zoo. At 4 years old, I was managing 3 chickens (I remember two silkies and a black australorp!), 5 ducks, a pot belly pig, and numerous rabbits (I don’t even remember how many, there were just countless ones wandering around our yard). In addition to raising and caring for these animals, I rode horses, mainly barrel racing, and casual show jumping.
